As part of a national effort announced by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Bishops of Canada have made a $30-million collective financial commitment to support healing and reconciliation initiatives for residential school survivors, their families, and their communities.

This commitment is one of the resolutions made by the Bishops during their plenary assembly from September 20-24, 2021.

The Archdiocese of Edmonton will undertake initiatives to provide funds in support of programs and initiatives that respond to the various needs that exist among Indigenous Peoples in our local area.

This is a tangible expression of the commitment of Archbishop Richard Smith, and the Bishops across Canada, to walk together with the Indigenous Peoples on the long road towards healing and reconciliation.

“Right relationships with Indigenous Peoples have long been among the primary concerns of the Bishops of Canada,” Archbishop Smith wrote in a letter to the faithful announcing a special delegation of Indigenous Peoples to meet with Pope Francis this December in Rome.

“We live in a time of deep division and wide polarization among peoples and nations. Everyone is searching for the way back to one another. By walking together with Indigenous Peoples along the path of real healing and renewed relationships, we can demonstrate clearly that reconciliation is not only possible but also can become a reality in our very day.”

The funds raised in the Archdiocese of Edmonton will support local programs and initiatives focused on three pillars: education, linguistic and cultural preservation, and family support.

The criteria for supporting programs, initiatives and efforts will be Indigenous-determined and Indigenous-led. Organizations to receive support will be discerned by an Indigenous-led steering committee. Transparency and accountability will be assured throughout the process. Further information will be communicated in December of this year.

There were 26 residential schools in Alberta. Two of them – Ermineskin and Youville – were within the current boundaries of the Archdiocese. More information can be found on this information sheet.

Let us together pray that the Lord enlighten the way forward toward healing and reconciliation. As we walk together with the Indigenous Peoples of our common home, may God grant us a new path marked by truth, justice, healing, and reconciliation.

Thank you for your generous support!
